- Karnak Open-air Museum - This renowned landmark in Luxor displays monumental ancient architecture, featuring impressive statues, columns, and the largest temple ever constructed, all conveniently located near the lively downtown area. The construction of Karnak Temple spanned over 1,000 years, a timeline that is evident in the diverse art and architecture that characterize this Egyptian site.
- Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - The magnificent Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari is one of the great funerary monuments of the ancient world, comparable in grandeur to the Pyramids. Carved into the towering cliff face that shelters the Valley of the Kings on the opposite side, the temple rises across three massive terraces connected by ramps, each level defined by a colonnade of simple, unadorned square pillars. Named after one of ancient Egypt’s rare female pharaohs, Hatshepsut fittingly referred to her monument as the “Splendor of Splendors.” Although much of the construction dates back to earlier rulers, starting with Mentuhotep II in 2050 BC, many sphinxes and statues have since disappeared, giving the structure a more monolithic appearance. The cool stone interior provides a welcome respite from the relentless heat, featuring well-preserved wall reliefs and vibrant hieroglyphics in brilliant colors.
- Valley of the Kings - The Valley of the Kings is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders, home to numerous tombs adorned with art and hieroglyphics. Discover the tomb of King Tutankhamun, the valley’s most famous attraction, and then visit the temples of Ramses II’s sons, Amenhotep III, and others to admire centuries-old art and artifacts.
- Colossi of Memnon - Although little remains of Amenhotep III’s grand memorial temple, the two towering statues of the pharaoh that once guarded the ancient entrance still stand strong after 3,400 years. Today, visitors can head to the banks of the Nile, just across from Luxor, to marvel at these colossal manmade sculptures. Alongside the impressive twin statues, travelers can also view two smaller figures of the pharaoh’s wife, Tiy, and mother, Mutemwia. Additionally, the sandstone panel carvings depicting the Nile god Hapy offer a closer look at the artistry of the time. While much of the Colossi has succumbed to weathering and the passage of time, the site still conveys a sense of the awe it once inspired.
- Luxfour Alabaster Factory - Discover the remarkable craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian artisans at the Alabaster factory. Admire the detailed carvings and sculptures created from alabaster, a translucent stone that was highly valued in ancient Egypt.
