• Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - The magnificent Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari is one of the great funerary monuments of the ancient world, comparable in grandeur to the Pyramids. Carved into the towering cliff face that shelters the Valley of the Kings on the opposite side, the temple rises across three massive terraces connected by ramps, each level defined by a colonnade of simple, unadorned square pillars. Named after one of ancient Egypt’s rare female pharaohs, Hatshepsut fittingly referred to her monument as the “Splendor of Splendors.” Although much of the construction dates back to earlier rulers, starting with Mentuhotep II in 2050 BC, many sphinxes and statues have since disappeared, giving the structure a more monolithic appearance.
