I saw historically significant places in La Coruna - I was in La Coruna for work related activities and I had 1 day off, so I decided to see some historically significant places in La Coruna and I opted for this walking tour. It was a good decision and I hence saw La Coruna in a relaxed manner, thanks to the tour guide.

Seafront Garden and old town walk - La Caruña in the north coast of Galicia has a long seafront with a beach and gardens. Starting from The Méndez Núñez gardens have several different areas of plantings, statues and features of local interest as well as providing cool shade from the heat of the day. Walking through the gardens about mile long on to the Crystal Town on Avenida Marina. So named as all the buildings are glass fronted with similar designed windows. At the end of Avenida Marina turn left into Rύa de Fama to go to Praza de Maria Pita with its impressive City Hall. Ascending the stairs on the left to behind the Square is the Market of St Augustine, with its iconic parabolic roof. Ascending further enter the Rúa Parotte where the 12th century Romanesque church stood. It is probably the oldest church in La Coruña which was built next to the port to welcome the pilgrims travelling to Santiago along the Pilgrims Way. It houses a statue of Saint James the Greater that the pilgrims would embrace in a display of intense emotion. Ascending further on we came to the Collegiate Church of Santa María del Campo in Rúa Damas which houses several interesting artefacts as well as wonderful works of art from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries. The inside of the building has leaning columns. Ascending further there is The Tower of Hercules, a World Heritage site. It is a Roman lighthouse from ancient Brigantium It dates from the 2nd c CE, from the time of Trajan, and was restored in 1788 by order of King Charles IV of Spain. Three legends are combined together to explain the story - Legend of Hercules, Breogan and Trenzenzonio. Hercules built a lighthouse tower over the burial site of Greyon whom he had slain and founded a city which he named Crunia in memory of the first woman who lived there, with whom he fell in love. Breogan son the Celtic chieftain who subdued the tribes of Spain, founded the city of Brigantia (A Coruña) and built a tower next to it, which he called the Tower of Breogan. The monk Trezenzonio thought like Breogan that they could see Ireland from top of the tower. All involving mirrors. Then descending past the Maria Pita square, and in to another lane Rύa Franja where many renowned restaurants specialised in seafood and hams. the aromas of the foods emanating were delightful.
