Great place to spend a day - This was a fantastic tour. My Guide was Gogo and she was extremely knowledgeable and fun to be with. She helped to fill the gap in.my own knowledge of Egyptian history. Even though this is the old museum it was still filled with a lot of amazing items like the silver coffin. I would suggest you visit here before visiting the new museum.

Best experience ever - The only true museum of ancient Egypt, that of auguste Mariette! What a pity it will soon disappear! It's not a museum, but rather the storage center for the largest number of Egyptian antiquities. Few explanations, a lot of dust, but what a collection and what an atmosphere of the past, that of Champollion, Maspero and Carter... A must-see for real enthusiasts, before it closes! The new museum is sadly too modern in comparaison!

Great place to go back in time and study the history - What an amazing place this was. So full of history with Tutankhamun the highlight. I believe they are in the process of transferring these artifacts to the grand egyptian museum which is almost fully open. Check this when you go. Lots of tour companies go here so turn up early for some piece and quiet

Beautiful, educational and interesting - It is a beautiful old building where the rich history can be seen. Definitely worth seeing is the golden mask and the 2 golden sarcophagi of Tutankhamun.

Old and not worth the time anymore. - We stopped by the Old Egyptian Museum in Cairo at the end of June 2025. While there are still some impressive artifacts to see, the museum feels like it's slowly being emptied out. The King Tut room now holds only a few items—most notably the famous gold mask and a couple of elaborate coffins. The lack of air conditioning throughout the building, and now including the Tut room, made the visit tough in the summer heat. Entry cost us 550 EGP, and considering what’s left on display, it might not feel like a great value for many visitors. If you're looking for a fuller experience, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is the better bet. Just keep in mind that the rest of the Tut collection won't be fully transferred there until sometime in 2026.

WARNING!!!! - Although the Old Cairo Museum is amazing and a must see, be careful if you purchase anything in their gift shop. I was tired, and bought a paperback book and cheap necklace and the charge on my card was $369. My fault for not noticing but be aware!!!
