- Giza Plateau - The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are among the world’s most renowned tourist attractions, having been so even during Roman times. Each of these magnificent structures served as the final resting place for a king of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was constructed for King Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), with the other two built for his son and grandson, Khafre and Menkaure. Khufu’s pyramid is the oldest and largest of the three, and it remained the tallest structure for 3,800 years!
While the three pyramids dominate the plateau, they are surrounded by numerous other monuments. Each king’s pyramid was part of a larger complex that included smaller queens’ pyramids, a satellite pyramid serving as a symbolic tomb for the king, mastaba tombs for nobility and family members, and burials of actual and/or symbolic boats.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The only completely preserved portrait of the king is a three-inch high ivory figurine discovered in a temple ruin at Abydos in 1903. Other reliefs and statues were found in fragments, and many of Khufu’s buildings are lost. Information about Khufu comes from inscriptions in his necropolis at Giza and later documents, such as the Westcar Papyrus from the 13th dynasty.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple revealed several statues of Khafre, discovered in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860, with further finds during excavations by Sieglin (1909–10), Junker, and Reisner.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also yielded several statues of Menkaure.
- Great Sphinx - Then, visit The Sphinx, the legendary guardian with a lion’s body and the head of King Chephren, standing by the vast funeral complex.
- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Continue your day tour at the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, showcasing the largest and most valuable collection of Egyptian art in the world. It features over 250,000 genuine artifacts dating back 5,000 years, including a special exhibit dedicated to Tutankhamun, with treasures, gold, and jewelry buried in his tomb for over 3,500 years before their discovery in the 1920s.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Finally, visit the Khan El Khalili Bazaar, where numerous shops offer fine brassware, copper, perfumes, leather, silver, gold, antiques, and more. (1 hour spent)
The tour concludes with a drop-off at the customer’s hotel in Cairo.
