Durmitor is renowned for its unique geological features and natural beauty, which have earned it the status of a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the Tara Canyon. The mountain is famous for its seasonal shepherds’ settlements known as katuns, where cattle breeders bring cows and sheep during the summer and stay until the first cold days and snow arrive. The mountain also hosts mysterious medieval tombstones called stećci, which were jointly nominated by Montenegro, Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia and recently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. On the way to Durmitor, visitors will have the chance to stop at lookouts offering breathtaking views of the Piva River Canyon and Piva Lake, the largest reservoir of drinking water in the Balkans, as well as the most famous of Durmitor’s 18 glacial lakes – Black Lake.
