Set off early in the morning for a 3-hour drive south to Abu Simbel, located on the shores of Lake Nasser. This globally celebrated site is where Ramses II commissioned the carving of two sun temples from the limestone mountains.
At the Great Temple of Ra-Harakhte and Amon-Re, four iconic colossal statues of Ramses II gaze majestically across the desert, while six grand statues stand before the Temple of Hathor. This temple, dedicated to the cow-headed goddess of love, was built in honor of Ramses’s beloved wife, Queen Nefertari.
Originally carved into the mountainside, the temple is now covered by an artificial mountain, designed to mimic the original setting. The temple was initially constructed so that the rising sun would illuminate the statues of Ramses and penetrate the inner sanctuary every February 22nd and October 22nd.
