• Abu Simbel Temple Complex - The Abu Simbel site features two grand rock-cut temples located in the village of Abu Simbel (Arabic: أبو سمبل), within the Aswan Governorate of Upper Egypt, near the Sudanese border. Positioned on the western shore of Lake Nasser, it lies approximately 230 km (140 mi) southwest of Aswan (or about 300 km (190 mi) by road). These twin temples were originally hewn from the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the 19th Dynasty under Pharaoh Ramesses II. The colossal rock reliefs of Ramesses II on the exterior have become iconic. Smaller figures of his wife, Nefertari, and children are depicted at his feet. Inside the Great Temple, sculptures celebrate Ramesses II’s valor at the Battle of Kadesh.

The entire complex was relocated in 1968 to higher ground to prevent submersion by Lake Nasser, the reservoir of the Aswan Dam. As part of the International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, an artificial hill was constructed from a domed structure to house the Abu Simbel Temples.
