Independence Square - Also known as Black Star Square, this is the site of Ghana’s Independence Day parade on March 6th each year. The square includes monuments commemorating Ghana’s independence struggle, such as the Independence Arch, Black Star Gate, and the Liberation Day Monument. It is the second largest city square in the world, after Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China.
Makola Market - Accra’s largest open-air market is bustling with goods, people, scents, and sounds. It is the perfect place to experience a West African market. The market is a vibrant place with narrow alleyways and women carrying large bowls and packages on their heads. It’s a great spot for shopping, though often crowded. Your guide will show you the most interesting parts of the market and find excellent photo opportunities. Plan to spend the day, as there is much to see.
National Museum of Ghana - At the National Museum of Ghana, you will see displays that explain Ghanaian culture and traditions. Exhibits include chiefs’ regalia, indigenous musical instruments, gold-weights, beads, traditional textiles, stools, pottery, and displays on traditional dance, agriculture, iron making, the slave trade in Ghana, Senfu masks from La Cote d’Ivoire, and Zulu wooden figures and bead-ware from various cultures.
