Amazing Experience - This tour started super early but it was necessary! Our guide, Frank, was on time and engaging. He made sure we were good and took photos for our group. He also answered questions we had, even those unrelated to the tour! The trip to the Assin Manso Slave River was humbling. To experience it as well as be well educated about what occurred was very well received by myself and my friends. The tour guide for that portion of the trip was so good! Then we visited both the Elmina and Cape Coast dungeons. It was super emotional to learn of the atrocities my ancestors faced. What they endured was horrific and yet they were not broken. I am honored to have these connections to my roots. Please be aware at the time of this review the roads to the coast were basically non-existent so if you have motion sickness, be prepared! Otherwise, we highly recommend this tour!!!

An eye opening,... - An eye opening, necessary, and heartbreaking experience. All guides were incredibly knowledgeable and respectful to the enslaved people. Foster made the experience easeful and also shared so many other details. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn about the horrors of slavery and honor the ancestors who suffered and survived.

A Powerful Day - The visit to the Assin Manso River was an incredible experience! Brother Kofi’s guidance and knowledge were wonderful and helped to make this very meaningful. The castles were also powerful to visit. Lunch at the El Mina Castle restaurant: Anomansa was absolutely delicious! Jesse, our server, was also great. David, our driver and main tour guide for the overall experience was 10/10! He provided lots of information throughout the whole day; had great conversation and also provided space for us to reflect and relax. This was a day we will never forget. Thank you!

Good tour. Long Day. - The car picked us up from the hotel promptly at 5:30am. We thought it was going to take us to a central meeting point to meet up for a bus transfer, but turns out this tour was literally just us, which was a pleasant surprise. We first drove to Assin Manso, which took about 4 hours. At Assin Manso, we were the only couple there, so the experience was totally private. The guide, Kofi, was excellent and the experience was very personal, powerful, and framed the rest of the trips to the castles.
The drive to the castles took about another 1.5 hours. We ordered lunch from the restaurant menu first, then went to Cape Coast Castle, which was another powerful experience. We then ate lunch, and drove about 15 minutes to Elmina Castle. While bigger, Cape Coast had a bigger impact for us, and I'm glad we did the sequence the way we did. The sights, the smell, the feel of the heat and difficult ventilation in the dungeons made the experience all the more impactful when you consider what it must have been like. Lunch at the restaurant was tasty. The drive back to the hotel took over 4 hours and we didn't return until after 7:30pm.
Overall, we were so happy we chose the tour that included Assin Manso instead of the national park. This was the best part of the tour and shaped the whole experience. It was a pleasant surprise that it was truly a private tour, but our guides in the car did not tell us that much about the sites. They didn't want to take away from the guides at the individual sites, but they answered a lot of questions we had about life in Ghana and thoughts about different things.
What could have been improved - the car was not that big and having to sit in the back seat for almost 10 hours became very painful on my knees. A SUV would have been better. Also, the roads are terrible and if my wife hadn't taken Dramamine, her car sickness would have been really bad. Having to leave so early meant we missed breakfast and we didn't know if we would stop anywhere to eat. It would be good to bring food or snacks. Also, we thought more cold water would have been available, but you have to pick it up off of hawkers on the road as you go. Overall, we would recommend this tour, but be prepared to spend 10 hours of a 14 hour tour in the car.

Rushed, Reckless, and Not as Advertised: A Disappointing Tour - "I have very mixed feelings about this tour. On one hand, the historical significance of the Slave River and Cape Coast Castle was profoundly moving, and the local guides at these sites were excellent. However, the experience was significantly marred by several issues.
Two months prior, I booked a private tour for myself and a companion to celebrate my birthday. The day before, Frank contacted me asking if we’d be willing to share our tour and van with three additional American tourists due to "vehicle trouble." While I initially expressed my preference for the private tour I booked, I was assured it would be "taken care of."
Unfortunately, the reality was far from what I expected. Instead of Frank, we were picked up by another driver who, regrettably, drove in a manner that was both reckless and alarming. The five-hour journey was filled with high-speed driving, aggressive lane changes, and squeezing between large trucks, making it an incredibly stressful and uncomfortable experience. I felt unwell halfway through. The driver also seemed rushed and pushy, which further detracted from the experience. The driver also was held up at a police checkpoint for 30-minutes because he didn’t have a license on him, and started driving even crazier to make up the time.
Upon arrival, we discovered that Frank was indeed driving the other three tourists, who were still included in our tour group, contrary to my understanding of a private booking. This was particularly disappointing as I had booked a private tour well in advance. The tour castle itself felt rushed, further adding to our dissatisfaction.
While the historical sites and their local guides were commendable, the overall experience was significantly impacted by the unsafe driving, the lack of a private tour as booked, and the feeling of being rushed. I booked a private experience for my birthday, and that is not what I received. While I understand vehicle issues may arise, the solution felt poorly executed and ultimately diminished the quality of the tour. I hope future bookings are handled with more clarity and consideration for the customer's initial reservation.
