- Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park - Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River – The Last Bath / The First Bath of Return
Assin Manso, situated in Ghana’s Central Region, was a pivotal slave market and the location of the enslaved Africans’ “last bath” before being transported to the coastal dungeons. Known as Donko Nsuo, this river was where captured Africans were cleansed, rested, and inspected before their final journey to Elmina or Cape Coast for transatlantic shipment.
Today, Assin Manso is a revered site of remembrance and healing. Its serene waters hold the memories of those who passed through in chains. The site includes the Memorial Garden of Return, where the remains of two formerly enslaved Africans from the U.S. and Jamaica were reburied in 1998.
Walking these grounds is a spiritual and emotional journey—an invitation to reconnect with the past, honor the ancestors, and reflect on a legacy of resilience, survival, and ancestral pride.

This sacred tour guides you through dark dungeons, punishment cells, and the infamous Door of No Return—retracing the final steps of the ancestors. Their spirits remain, calling for remembrance and reverence.
As you continue the path from Assin Manso’s Ancestral River to the coast, Elmina becomes a place of prayer, reflection, and healing—transforming pain into strength and reclaiming identity in honor of those who came before.
