August 2019 marks 400 years since the first documented arrival of a slave ship in Virginia, which led to the intensification of the tragic Middle Passage. Hundreds of descendants of formerly enslaved Africans will make a proud return to their ancestral homeland.
The journey will take them to Ghana: the birthplace of Kwame Nkrumah, the leader of Ghana’s independence and a co-founder of the Organization of African Unity; the nation where the esteemed pan-Africanist Dr. W. E. B. DuBois spent his final years.
This is the land where Ashanti Kings continue to hold court and resolve disputes through age-old traditions passed down through generations; the country that has preserved more slave dungeons used in the transatlantic slave trade than any other on the continent. Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve independence from European rule and is now a flourishing democracy, while its traditions, customs, and culture remain largely intact.
