The journey to Debre Libanos traverses the highlands north of Addis Ababa, showcasing Ethiopia’s charming village scenery before dramatically revealing a 1,000-meter deep gorge at Debre Libanos.
• Debre Libanos - A brief rest will be taken at the gorge’s summit, where various bird species can be observed. A short hike, lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, will lead across an old bridge, originally constructed for trade, to reach a terraced waterfall and caves inhabited by monkeys.
• Debre Libanos - In the afternoon, the sanctuary will be visited, where the renowned monastery of Debre Azbo (later Debre Libanos) was established in the 13th century and destroyed in 1937 during the Italian occupation. The octagonal church, featuring glass paintings by artist Afework Tekle, who also designed the windows of the Africa Hall in Addis Ababa, will be explored, along with the newly constructed museum housing art treasures. A late afternoon drive back to Addis will conclude the visit.
