Explore the Renowned Dorze Tribe, Culture, and Lifestyle
Dorze Village - After a leisurely breakfast, transfer to Bole International Airport for a flight from Addis to Arbaminch. Upon arrival, travel to Dorze, situated at 2900m elevation. Visiting and staying in Dorze village offers a captivating opportunity to experience the traditional lifestyle of the Dorze people. Known as warriors, the Dorze tribe is famous for their cotton woven cloths and beehive huts. Their traditional textiles are colorful. Before reaching Dorze, ascend Gughe hill for dramatic views. Upon arrival, walk through the Dorze villages, explore the beehive-shaped huts, and learn about their staple food made from False Banana. In the evening, enjoy traditional dance. The Dorze Mountain Range provides excellent landmarks for views of Lake Chamo, Lake Abaya, and the Great East African Rift Valley.
Journey to Lake Chamo for a Boat Safari - Gidole - Konso
Arba Minch - Early in the morning, pack lunch and drive to Arba Minch for a boat safari on Lake Chamo to observe the lake’s aquatic life, including hippos and Africa’s largest crocodile. Continue driving to Gidole town (2050m elevation) to experience the unique and captivating “Filla” wind instrument dance in Ethiopia, taste “Kurkufa,” a local dish made from Moringa and grain, and enjoy organic Arabica coffee. Visit the vibrant Gidole Market, then drive to Konso, descending scenic roads with beautiful views.
Discover Konso’s Cultural Landscapes (UNESCO World Heritage) and King’s Compound, then Drive to Turmi
Konso Cultural Centre - Drive to Turmi, stopping at Key Afer Market, bustling with crafts, produce, and tribal artistry. In the evening, visit a Hamar village to witness the Evangadi dance, a soulful performance under the stars.
Travel to Omorate and Visit the Dassench Tribe
Journey to Karo, Visit the Fascinating Karo Tribe, and Drive to Jinka
Omorate - After breakfast, embark on a drive to visit the Karo people residing on the banks of the Omo River. The Karo are renowned for their colorful body painting, often mimicking guinea fowl plumage patterns. Return and continue driving to Jinka. (Saturday is Market day in Turmi). Before checking into your hotel, visit the Jinka Museum.
Visit the Mursi Tribe and Mago National Park
Mago National Park - After breakfast, drive to Mursi via Jinka. The Mursi people inhabit Mago National Park between the Omo and Mago Rivers. There is an option to camp in the park, offering the chance to see various wildlife: defassa, waterbuck, gerenuk, bushbuck, Jackson’s hartebeest, lesser kudu, and guereza monkey.
Mursi women are known for wearing clay or wood plates in their lips and ears, along with remarkable hairstyles adorned with metal rings and various fabrics. The men display spectacular body paintings with white chalk. The Mursi women are famous for their lip plates. The insertion of wooden and terracotta (clay) discs into their earlobes is a common custom among the Mursi tribe. The women split and stretch their lower lips to accommodate larger discs. Drive back to Jinka and visit the Jinka Museum, which showcases the South Omo tribes with video support.
