Wukro - We will drive from Mekele to Wukro, a distance of 47km, to visit the Cherqos Wukro church. This church’s design is often characterized as cruciform or a ‘cross-in-square’ layout. Consequently, it is commonly associated with other churches that share this architectural plan, such as Abreha we Atsbeha and Mikael Imba. The interior of the church is divided into either three or five aisles, which varies based on one’s interpretation of the intermediate supports in the cross-section, as noted by Ruth Plant. The church’s cruciform shape is accentuated by the barrel vault aligned with the apse and the holy sanctuary that houses the tabot. Plant observed Axumite influences in the frieze details above the columns at the three arms of the crossing. The columns have chamfered shafts that rise from the floor bases, and the smaller columns feature squared capitals with elliptical chamfered edges. Plant mentioned that the bracket capitals at the crossing are not as intricately crafted as those found in Abreha we Atsbeha.
