The tour begins with a drive along the northern coast of the island, where participants will visit the 12th-century Byzantine church of Panagia Kera, located 1 km from the village of Kritsa. The journey continues along the scenic coastal road through the charming village of Elounda. Among these is the picturesque sea-front village of Plaka, where the group will board a boat to the now uninhabited island of Spinalonga. The guide will lead a tour through the ruins of the former leper colony, which operated from 1903 to 1957, providing lepers with improved living conditions, medical care, and economic support.
Following the visit to Spinalonga, there will be free time to swim in the crystal-clear waters of Plaka and enjoy an optional lunch. The tour will then proceed to Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lassithi. This town is known for the bottomless salt lake Voulismeni, which is a prominent feature of the area. The city offers fascinating Archaeological, Folklore, and Natural History museums, Byzantine churches, a well-equipped marina, and traditional squares filled with lively cafés and restaurants.
