- Vrindavan - The city of Vrindavan derives its name from the goddess Vrinda (symbolized by the plant Ocimum tenuiflorum or tulasí) and the term “forest”. Vrindavan is home to approximately 65,000 residents in the Mathura region of Uttar Pradesh, India.
- Mathura District - Situated about 50 kilometers northwest of Agra, Mathura is renowned as the birthplace of Krishna in Indian mythology and is one of India’s seven sacred cities. The city stands on the site of the ancient Kushan Kingdom’s capital. Due to persecution by his uncle Kamsa (later defeated by Krishna), Krishna was born in a prison cell. A temple was constructed above this site, making it a popular pilgrimage destination. Mathura is also celebrated for its exquisite red sandstone sculptures, which are part of the first golden age of Indian art during the first six centuries CE.
- Agra Fort - The impressive “Red Fort” in Agra, a world-famous monument and a popular tourist destination, is located on a partially natural, partially artificial hill along the Yamuna River, about 1.5 km from the Taj Mahal. It spans 380,000 square meters and is encircled by a 12-meter red sandstone wall, symbolizing imperial power. The fort complex has a crescent shape and is surrounded by a robust wall up to 21 meters high, with a perimeter of 2.4 kilometers. The wall, like most enclosed structures, is made of bricks and faced with red sandstone slabs. However, the palace buildings constructed by Shah Jahan in the 17th century inside the fort are entirely lined with white marble and adorned with stone or glass.
- Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah - Often referred to as the “Little Taj” due to its resemblance to the Taj Mahal, the Tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah is considered one of the most significant architectural compositions. The complex comprises four red sandstone structures positioned at the cardinal points, connected by fortress walls with tinted plaster, and a central mausoleum with four minarets. The design incorporates precious stones and gold both inside and outside. Besides the main building, the structure includes numerous auxiliary buildings and gardens. Sometimes called the “Baby Taj,” the tomb is often viewed as a precursor to the Taj Mahal, with its interior believed to be inspired by the Taj Mahal’s decoration, built by his stepson, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Constructed between 1622 and 1628, the tomb marks the transition between the first phase of Mughal architecture.
- Fatehpur Sikri - Located near Agra in Uttar Pradesh, India, Fatehpur Sikri features a vast palace area and one of India’s largest mosques. Its proximity to Agra and the Taj Mahal (about 40 kilometers) makes it a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors across generations due to its quality, scale, and architectural style. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986, it exemplifies 16th-century Indian culture and is the best-preserved ghost town in India. Built in honor of the Sufi saint Salim Chisti (Akbar was delighted by the birth of a son as predicted by this Sufi), it served as the Mughal empire’s capital for 14 years before the emperor moved to Lahore. It represents a perfect example of a Mughal fortified city with extensive public and private areas.
