- Taj Mahal - The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan as a tribute to his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away during childbirth in 1631. Her death left the emperor so devastated that his hair reportedly turned grey almost immediately. Construction of the Taj began the following year; while the main structure was completed in eight years, the entire complex wasn’t finished until 1653. Shortly after its completion, Shah Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb and confined in Agra Fort, where he spent his remaining years gazing at his masterpiece through a window. Upon his death in 1666, Shah Jahan was laid to rest here beside Mumtaz.
- Agra Fort - Situated along the Yamuna River, construction of the fort was initiated by Emperor Akbar in 1565 on the site of an older fort. His grandson, Shah Jahan, made further enhancements, particularly using his preferred material, white marble. Initially built as a military fortification, Shah Jahan later converted it into a palace, and it eventually became his opulent prison for eight years after Aurangzeb took power in 1658.
The fort’s massive double walls rise over 20 meters and span 2.5 kilometers in circumference. The Yamuna River once flowed along the fort’s straight eastern side, where the emperors had their private bathing ghats. The fort encompasses a labyrinth of buildings, creating a city within a city, including extensive underground areas. However, many structures were destroyed over time by Nadir Shah, the Marathas, the Jats, and finally the British, who used the fort as a garrison. Even today, a significant portion of the fort is occupied by the military.
