Read the Details of Your Taj Mahal Ticket Carefully - I purchased a private Taj Mahal tour that included skip-the-line tickets, a photographer, and lunch. Some elements of the experience did not match what was advertised or paid for.
Private Tour
Although I booked a private tour, the guide initially combined me with a family who had also purchased private tours. I was forced to wait twenty minutes for the family to join us. This caused confusion for both parties.
Skip-the-Line Tickets
I paid extra for skip-the-line entry. The family did not. Despite this, the guide had me wait in the regular line with them. After they repeatedly requested the service they paid for, the guide took me to the skip-the-line entrance. Once inside the Taj grounds, he again delayed the tour while waiting for the family before eventually transferring them to another guide. As a result, I received no benefit from the expedited access I purchased.
Photography
The guide took over 120 photos. Approximately 10 were usable due to framing, timing, and composition. At one point, a professional photographer took six photos. All six were high quality, which highlighted the difference in quality between the professional photos and those taken by the guide.
Conduct and Professional Boundaries
Before entering the Taj, the guide took me to a shop. During this time, he stood very close to me and whispered that I should not share information with other tourists. After leaving the shop, he placed his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close. I moved away. He later attempted to touch me again, at which point I clearly asked him to stop. He complied.
As a solo female traveler, I found this conduct inappropriate and unprofessional.
Review Pressure and Post-Tour Contact
The guide repeatedly encouraged me to submit a review before the tour ended, stating it was necessary for him to receive future work. Hours after the tour concluded, he sent follow-up text messages such as “Hello, everything ok.” There was no outstanding business or reason for additional contact.
Overall, this experience did not reflect the private, premium tour that was advertised and paid for. Solo travelers, particularly women, should be aware of these issues.
