Upon arrival in Vadodara, the first stop is the magnificent Laxmi Vilas Palace. Constructed by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890 at a cost of 180,000 Pounds Sterling, it stands as the largest private residence ever built, approximately four times the size of Buckingham Palace. Part of the palace has been transformed into a museum showcasing the Maharaja’s private collection. This includes paintings by British artists such as Turner and Constable, alongside masterpieces by Indian artists like Raja Ravi Varma. The museum also boasts a rich assortment of marble and bronze sculptures, as well as an Oriental Gallery featuring Japanese and Chinese sculptures collected by the Maharaja during his travels.
Following the palace and museum tour, enjoy lunch (at your own expense) at a local restaurant.
- Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery - Post-lunch, visit the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery. Established by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the museum opened to the public in 1894. Modeled after the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, it houses an impressive collection of original paintings by European masters, a remarkable array of sculptures, Indian miniature paintings, and a comprehensive section on Tibetan Art. Highlights include an Egyptian mummy and the skeleton of a blue whale.
- Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park - After exploring the museum, travel to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park. Located 30 miles from Vadodara, the park features numerous monuments illustrating the transition from Hindu to Muslim culture and architecture in the 15th and 16th centuries. Spend the afternoon discovering the various forts, palaces, mosques, tombs, temples, and stepwells, dating from the 8th to the 14th century.
At the conclusion of the tour, guests will be driven back to Ahmedabad and returned to their hotel.
