- Red Beach - Red Beach is arguably one of the most renowned and stunning beaches in Santorini. It is situated just a short distance from the ancient site of Akrotiri.
The beach’s small size often results in a bustling atmosphere, and on many days, visitors opt to admire the unique landscape of red and black volcanic rocks from the headland rather than descend to the beach itself.
- Perissa Black Sand Beach - This beautiful black sand beach is located 15 km southeast of Fira, stretching for 7 km along Santorini’s southeastern coast.
The beach is known for its distinctive features, including black sand, clear waters, and various beach amenities. However, the main attraction is the massive rock called Mesa Vouno, which rises from the sea. Visitors are captivated by the breathtaking view of the rock, especially when it glows in the dark.
Perissa is a charming tourist resort that experiences a significant influx of visitors starting in the middle of the summer season. The village offers a wide range of accommodations to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as restaurants, taverns, cafes, and bars.
The area is highly developed with modern amenities and is quite inviting while maintaining its strong traditional character.
- Monastery of Profitis Ilias - The highest point on the island (567 meters) is located between Pyrgos and Kamari. The mountain is named Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elijah), after the monastery at its peak. From this vantage point, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire island, from the patchwork agricultural plains to the hilltop village of Oia.
The monastery was built in 1712, and its surrounding walls resemble a fortress. The history of Profitis Ilias is long and significant for Santorini’s life over the centuries. In earlier times, it owned its own ship, which conducted private business for the monastery’s benefit, and it was an active intellectual and patriotic influence. From 1806 to 1845, it operated a school where Greek language and literature were taught.
The monastery’s decline began in 1860, and its buildings suffered serious damage in the 1956 earthquakes. Today, the monastery houses an important collection of icons, bibles, and artifacts of the Greek Orthodox religion, as well as ecclesiastical objects, books, and ethnographic material. It also hosts displays on shoemaking, printing, candle making, wine making, and typical local food.
- Skaros Rock - The next stop is Imerovigli, a picturesque village located north of Santorini, just 2 km from the capital of Fira. It is a continuation of Fira and one of the island’s most beautiful balconies. The name Imerovigli comes from the word “vigla,” meaning view spot.
The village’s position offers a clear view of the caldera, and in ancient times, it allowed villagers to spot approaching pirate ships. Today, Imerovigli is recognized as a traditional settlement.
Imerovigli is home to numerous hotels and traditional houses, as well as many taverns and cafes with stunning views of the caldera. In front of Imerovigli lies a massive rock called Skaros. Atop it is a castle built in the 13th century, which was abandoned in the early 1800s.
The castle once housed all the island’s administrative offices. This part of the island collapsed after an earthquake, leaving only the large hill of Skaros today.
Imerovigli boasts numerous chapels and churches built on the rocks overlooking the blue sea. The village is known as the ultimate romantic destination.
- Three Bells of Fira - Fira is the capital of Santorini. On the caldera side, visitors can enjoy one of the best views of the island, and the activity level is enough to keep them entertained for hours. There are cafes, bars, and restaurants, most with views of the caldera, and some with multiple levels of patios and balconies to maximize the space and the fact that when several cruise ships are docked below, the town is bustling with tourists.
For those who enjoy shopping, dining, or simply relaxing and taking in the view, Fira is worth visiting for a few hours during the day or evening.
The port of Fira below is where cruise ships anchor, and tenders transport passengers to the small port, where they have three options. The first and perhaps most sensible choice is to take the cable car.
The second option is to ride a donkey, which many people end up doing because they promised their children they would, to get them excited about visiting Santorini.
The third option is to walk, which is only done by those in excellent shape who enjoy a challenge or have something to prove.
- Oia’s Main Street - The natural beauty of Oia village, combined with its traditional architecture of whitewashed houses, old mansions where captains once lived, narrow streets, and blue-domed churches, makes this village unique and extremely popular with visitors.
Photos and postcards featuring Oia’s sunset, caldera view, and blue-domed churches have traveled worldwide, showcasing the village’s incomparable beauty and enticing even more people to visit.
