A Journey to the Heart of Akumal

The sun was just beginning to rise over the Caribbean horizon as I found myself on a private van, heading towards Akumal Beach. The anticipation of the day ahead was palpable, not just for me, but for the small group of fellow adventurers I was with. Our guide, Xenia, greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of an unforgettable experience. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but the allure of swimming with sea turtles and exploring the mystical cenotes was something I couldn’t resist.

The drive from Playa del Carmen to Akumal was a breezy 45 minutes, filled with stories and laughter. Our driver, Rodo, ensured a smooth ride, allowing us to relax and soak in the lush landscapes of the Yucatan Peninsula. Upon arrival, we were equipped with life vests, masks, and snorkels, ready to dive into the vibrant underwater world.

As we boarded a small boat that took us 200 meters offshore, the excitement was electric. The water was a mesmerizing shade of turquoise, and the visibility was nothing short of spectacular. We slipped into the water, and immediately, the world above faded away, replaced by the serene beauty of the coral beds below.

We watched in silent wonder as they grazed on the sea grass, their movements graceful and unhurried.

Mystical Cenotes and a Taste of Tradition

After our ocean adventure, we were treated to a refreshing snack of bottled water and bananas before heading to our next destination: a private cenote. The short drive was filled with chatter about the turtles and the vibrant marine life we had just encountered.

The cenote was a hidden gem, nestled within the subtropical forest. As we descended the stairs into the cavern, the air was cool and inviting. The crystal-clear waters beckoned us to dive in, and we obliged, exploring the underwater formations of stalagmites and stalactites. It was like stepping into another world, one that felt both ancient and alive.

Our day concluded with a homemade lunch, where tortillas were cooked over an open fire right before our eyes. The flavors were simple yet satisfying, a perfect end to a day of exploration. As we toasted with tequila and reviewed the photos captured by Pame, our photographer, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experience.
