- Giza Plateau - The Giza Pyramid Complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. This site features the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their respective pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These structures were constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. The area also includes several cemeteries and the remnants of a workers’ village.
The site is situated at the edge of the Western Desert, approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) west of the Nile River in the city of Giza, and about 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of Cairo’s city center.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Although diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, the site remains unexcavated. The valley temple was linked to a causeway, which was largely destroyed during the village’s construction.
- Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex comprises a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple revealed several statues of Khafre, some of which were discovered in a well on the temple floor by Mariette in 1860. Additional statues were found during subsequent excavations by Sieglin (1909–10), Junker, and Reisner.
- Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also produced several statues of Menkaure.
- Great Sphinx - Conclude your layover day tour with a visit to The Sphinx, located near the Valley Temple. The Sphinx is the oldest and largest in Egypt, featuring a lion’s body and a human head, symbolizing power and intellect. The face of the Sphinx is a likeness of Khafre, who constructed the Middle Pyramid of Giza.
Camel rides and entry into any of the pyramids can be arranged, though they are subject to additional charges.
- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, commonly referred to as the Egyptian Museum or Museum of Cairo, is located in Cairo, Egypt. It houses an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, with 120,000 items in total. A significant portion is on display, while the rest are stored. Built in 1901 by the Italian construction company Garozzo-Zaffarani and designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, the museum is one of the largest in the region. As of March 2019, it is open to the public. In 2021, the museum is set to be replaced by the new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili is a renowned bazaar and souq located in Cairo’s historic center, Egypt. Established during the Mamluk era as a trade hub and named after one of its historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has become a major attraction for both tourists and locals. It is also home to numerous Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs.
