• Al Rifai Mosque - Continue your Cairo layover tour with a visit to El Rifaai Mosque, also known as the Royal Mosque, located in Cairo’s Midan al-Qal’a, near the Cairo Citadel. Opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, dating back to around 1361, this mosque was designed to complement the older structure. It was part of a 19th-century campaign by Egypt’s rulers to link themselves with the glory of Egypt’s Islamic history and modernize the city. It is considered the oldest mosque in the city that remains in its original form and is the largest in Cairo by land area. Commissioned by Ahmad ibn Ţūlūn, the Turkic Abbasid governor of Egypt from 868–884, the mosque’s construction began in 876 AD and was completed in 879 AD. Built on a small hill called Gebel Yashkur, or “The Hill of Thanksgiving,” local legend suggests Noah’s Ark rested here after the Deluge, rather than at Mount Ararat.

Commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate for the newly established capital in 970, its name is believed to reference the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah, known as az-Zahrā′ (“the shining or resplendent one”). It was the first mosque established in Cairo, a city now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.”
• Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Continue your tour with a visit to the Sultan Hassan Mosque, a massive Mamluk-era mosque and madrassa near the Citadel in Cairo. Construction began in 757 AH/1356 CE and concluded three years later “without a single day of idleness.” At the time, the mosque was notable for its impressive size and innovative architectural features. Commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan, the mosque included schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali.
