From Surf to Summit: A Day of Volcanoes, Coffee, and Waterfalls in Costa Rica
When the waves take a backseat, and the call of the volcanoes, coffee, and waterfalls beckons, you know it’s time for a different kind of adventure. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a day of exploration in Costa Rica’s stunning landscapes.
A Morning Brew with a View
As a seasoned traveler and wave chaser, I’ve had my fair share of adventures across Central America. But when I heard about the Costa Rica Adventure that promised volcanoes, coffee, and waterfalls, I knew it was time to trade my surfboard for hiking boots, if only for a day.
The day began with a warm welcome from our guide, Mario, who picked us up in a van that was as pristine as the beaches I frequent. Our first stop was the Doka Estate, a coffee plantation nestled on the slopes of the Poás Volcano. The air was filled with the rich aroma of coffee, and the breakfast buffet was a delightful start to the day. Fresh juices and the estate’s own coffee were the perfect companions as we learned about the journey from coffee seedling to the steaming cup in our hands. It was a fascinating process, and I found myself appreciating the craft as much as I do a perfectly shaped wave.
Into the Heart of the Volcano
With our caffeine fix secured, we headed to the Poás Volcano. The drive itself was a visual feast, with lush landscapes and microclimates changing as we ascended. On a clear day, the view into the crater is nothing short of spectacular, and we were lucky enough to experience it in all its glory. Standing at the edge, I felt a sense of awe similar to catching a massive wave—nature’s power and beauty on full display.
The Poás Volcano is a must-see, and while I’ve seen many natural wonders in my travels, this one ranks high on the list. The experience was enhanced by Mario’s insights into the ecosystem and the volcanic activity that shapes the landscape. It was a reminder of the dynamic forces at play beneath the earth’s surface, much like the ocean currents that dictate the perfect surf conditions.
Chasing Waterfalls
Our final destination was the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a place that seemed to encapsulate the essence of Costa Rica’s natural beauty. The gardens were alive with vibrant flowers and the sounds of wildlife, a symphony of nature that was both calming and invigorating. The waterfalls themselves were breathtaking, each one a cascade of pure, unbridled energy.
As I stood there, taking in the scene, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the ocean’s waves—each waterfall a unique expression of nature’s rhythm. The day ended with a sense of fulfillment, a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation that left me with memories to cherish.
For those of you who follow my journeys, you know I’m all about the surf, but this adventure was a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are found when you step off the beaten path. If you’re ever in Costa Rica, make sure to carve out a day for this tour. It’s a ride you won’t want to miss.
