The monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin are intimately linked and are just a 20-minute drive apart. According to legend, both monasteries were constructed by a father and son duo, with Sanahin being the earlier creation by the father. The name “Sanahin” translates to “this is older than the other.”
- Haghpat Monastery - Also a part of the UNESCO Heritage list, Haghpat Monastery shares a close connection with Sanahin Monastery. The name “Haghpat” translates to “great wall.” The primary church in the Haghpat Complex, St. Nshan or the Holy Cross, was established in 976, while the main church in the Sanahin Complex was built approximately 30 years prior.
Visitors to Haghpat can enjoy the tranquil ambiance and take in the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
