Discovering the Magic of Portugal’s Countryside: A Family Adventure
As a travel writer and mother, I was drawn to the Algarve Safari in Albufeira, Portugal, for its promise of adventure and education. Join me as I recount our magical journey through ancient ruins, charming villages, and breathtaking natural wonders.
A Journey Through Time and Nature
As a travel writer and a mother of three, I am always on the lookout for experiences that are both educational and fun for the whole family. When I heard about the Algarve Safari in Albufeira, Portugal, I knew it was something I had to experience. The promise of exploring ancient ruins, quaint villages, and natural wonders was too enticing to pass up.
Our adventure began with a warm welcome from Cody, our enthusiastic tour guide, who arrived in a classic 4x4 Jeep. The kids were thrilled to hop into the rugged vehicle, ready for a day of exploration. Our first stop was the Albufeira mountains, where we were treated to breathtaking views and a visit to a clay quarry and factory. Here, we learned about the intricate process of creating the beautiful, colorful crockery that Portugal is famous for. It was a fascinating glimpse into the local craftsmanship that even my youngest found intriguing.
Immersing in Local Culture
Next, we ventured into a charming village where we had the opportunity to mingle with the locals. Cody gave us a generous 30-minute break to explore, and we took full advantage by visiting a quaint café and a stunning church. The peaceful atmosphere and the chance to interact with the genuine old Portuguese town folk made this stop a highlight of our trip.
We continued our journey past the Castle of Paderne, where we marveled at the ancient architecture and the oldest olive tree I had ever seen. The kids were fascinated by the stories of the past, and it was a perfect opportunity to teach them about the rich history of the region. Our next stop was a local farm, where we sampled fresh honey and learned about the various herbs and jams available for purchase. The kids were particularly excited to try the famous “firewater,” a strong but delightful local spirit.
Nature’s Playground
The final leg of our journey took us further up the mountain to a picturesque village with a natural spring. Here, we had the chance to swim in the refreshing waters, surrounded by the beauty of nature. The kids were overjoyed, and even though one family had forgotten their swimming gear, Cody went above and beyond to ensure they could join in the fun.
As we made our way to the source of the spring, we were greeted by a stunning waterfall. The walk down was a bit challenging, especially for those with mobility issues, but the view was worth every step. Standing there, overlooking the magical natural water source, I felt a sense of peace and wonder that is hard to describe. It was a moment of spiritual healing and adrenaline all rolled into one.
Our day ended with a taste of fresh oranges, picked straight from the tree by Cody himself. The sweet, juicy fruit was the perfect way to conclude our adventure. As we made our way back, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share such a unique experience with my children. The Algarve Safari is truly a magical journey that I would recommend to any family looking to explore the real Portugal.
