- Bibliotheca Alexandrina - The ancient library of Alexandria was one of the most remarkable classical institutions, and while recreating it might seem daunting, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina achieves this with great success. Opened in 2002, this stunning modern architectural marvel aims to revive the brilliance of the original hub of learning and culture. The complex has become a key cultural venue in Egypt, hosting numerous international performers, and houses a collection of outstanding museums.
- Ancient Roman Amphitheater - The Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria was discovered purely by chance in 1960.
When workers began clearing a pile of dust and sand in 1960 to prepare the land for a government building, they uncovered solid iron columns, suggesting something was buried beneath. Excavation work immediately commenced at Kom El Dekka, conducted by the Greco Roman Museum and the Polish Excavation Mission in Egypt, sponsored by the University of Warsaw. This excavation soon led to one of the most significant discoveries in Egypt during the 20th century. The Roman Amphitheatre was used in various periods of time.
- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - Accidentally discovered in 1900 when a donkey fell through the ground, these catacombs represent the largest-known Roman burial site in Egypt and one of the last major constructions dedicated to ancient Egyptian religion. Showcasing Alexandria’s unique blend of Pharaonic and Greek styles, the architects employed a Graeco-Roman approach. The catacombs feature three tiers of tombs and chambers carved into bedrock to a depth of 35 meters (the lowest level is flooded and inaccessible).
- Pompey’s Pillar - A towering 30-meter column stands over the remnants of the ancient settlement of Rhakotis, the original township from which Alexandria expanded. Known as Pompey’s Pillar, this column, carved from red Aswan granite, has been a prominent city landmark for centuries: a single, tapered shaft, 2.7 meters at its base, topped with a fine Corinthian capital. The column rises from the sparse ruins of the Temple of Serapeum, a magnificent structure that once stood here.
- Kayetbai - The Citadel of Qaitbay is a 15th-century defensive fortress located on the Mediterranean Sea coast. The Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria is regarded as one of the most significant defensive strongholds, not only in Egypt but also along the Mediterranean Sea coast. It was built on the exact site of the renowned Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It played a crucial role in the fortification system of Alexandria in the 15th century AD.
