Amphitheaters were widespread during Roman rule, found in countries like Greece, Italy, and Turkey, and across Europe and the Middle East. The Roman Amphitheater in Alexandria is unique in Egypt. “Kom El Dekka” in Arabic means “hill of rubble” or “hill of benches,” named by historian El Neweiry in the early 20th century. He observed piles of rubble and sand from the Mahmoudeyya Canal excavation at the 19th century’s end, resembling large benches. El Neweiry gave the area its well-known name. The Roman Amphitheater in Alexandria is a significant Roman architectural achievement in Egypt.
• Montazah Gardens - Montaza Palace, located in Alexandria’s Montaza district, is a palace, museum, and expansive gardens. Built on a low plateau east of central Alexandria, it overlooks a Mediterranean beach. King Fuad I added the larger Al-Haramlik Palace and royal gardens to Montazah Palace in 1932 as a summer retreat. The Egyptian royal family used the palace for summer vacations. By 1932, King Fouad commissioned a larger palace, Haremlik, and his son, King Farouk, constructed a bridge to the sea.

Zaynab Fahmi built the palace in 1919 in Zizinya, Alexandria, as the residence of Fatma al-Zahra’, daughter of Prince Ali Haider, a descendant of Muhammad Ali Pasha. The palace, a stunning backdrop for the family’s magnificent possessions, uniquely blends European and Islamic styles, reflecting the royal family’s refined taste. Paintings, gilded ceilings, and mosaics adorn the palace rooms. It consists of two wings, eastern and western, connected by a corridor, each with a basement and two floors.
• Fort Qaitbey - Sultan Qaitbey constructed this charming fortress in the 14th century to protect Alexandria from the Ottoman Empire’s advances. Although the Ottomans took Egypt in 1512, the fortress remains, strategically positioned on a narrow land strip extending into Alexandria’s harbor from the corniche. The fortress’s current form is not original, as it suffered significant damage during the British bombardment of Alexandria in a nationalist uprising against British dominance in 1882 and was rebuilt around the 20th century’s turn.
