- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - Situated in Alexandria, Egypt, the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa are an extraordinary fusion of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures from the 2nd century AD. Unearthed in 1900, they functioned as a communal burial site and comprise three levels hewn into rock, although the lowest level is frequently submerged. A spiral staircase descends to chambers adorned with sarcophagi, loculi (burial niches), and elaborate carvings that blend Egyptian motifs with Greco-Roman styles. Notable sections include the Rotunda and Triclinium, where feasts were held to honor the deceased. Referred to as the “Mound of Shards” due to the broken pottery left by mourners, the catacombs reflect Alexandria’s diverse history and provide unique insights into ancient burial customs.
- Pompey’s Pillar - Pompey’s Pillar is a colossal Roman triumphal column in Alexandria, Egypt, and one of the city’s most renowned landmarks. Rising 26.85 meters (88 feet) and crafted from red granite, it was erected in 297 AD to commemorate Emperor Diocletian for rescuing the city during a famine. Despite its name, it bears no relation to Pompey the Great; the name likely originated from medieval misunderstandings. The column is the largest of its kind outside Rome and stands atop the remnants of the Serapeum, a magnificent temple dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian god Serapis. Encircled by sphinxes and other artifacts, it is a testament to Alexandria’s Roman legacy and remains a significant historical and architectural site.
- Qaitbay Castle - The Citadel of Qaitbay, perched on the Mediterranean coast of Alexandria, Egypt, is a magnificent 15th-century fortress constructed by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay in 1477 AD. It was built on the site of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which had been destroyed by earthquakes. The citadel served as a defensive bastion to shield the city from naval assaults. Its Mamluk architecture boasts thick walls, towering battlements, and a central square keep. Overlooking the harbor, it offers sweeping views of the sea and the city. Today, it stands as a symbol of Alexandria’s rich history and a favored tourist attraction.
- Library of Alexandria - The Library of Alexandria, established in the 3rd century BCE during the reign of Egypt’s Ptolemaic dynasty, was one of the most illustrious centers of learning in the ancient world. Located in Alexandria, it aspired to gather all human knowledge and housed hundreds of thousands of scrolls encompassing literature, science, philosophy, and more. Scholars from diverse cultures convened there, contributing to advancements in numerous fields. The library’s destruction, attributed to various events over centuries, remains a subject of debate. Its legacy endures in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern cultural center and library inaugurated in 2002 to honor its historical predecessor.
