- Alexandria - Experience the city and walk like an Egyptian!
We warmly invite everyone interested to join us, whether individuals, organizations, travel agencies, or travelers. “Walk like an Egyptian” offers non-Egyptians the opportunity to see and experience Egypt as a local would.
Travelish Tours Guide will meet participants at Saad Zaghloul Square, in front of the Cecil Hotel. Alexandria offers a rich tapestry of history, starting with the Jewish Synagogue, one of the largest in the Middle East. This magnificent Italian-built structure once served Alexandria’s vibrant Jewish community and features grand marble columns with seating for over 700 people. Next, we will visit Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, the historical seat of the Pope of Alexandria, head of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Following this, we will explore St. Catherine’s Cathedral, the Roman Catholic cathedral of the Apostolic Vicariate in Alexandria, Egypt, designed by Mario Avena in the Roman Baroque style. Here lies King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy. We will also see the Maronite Church of Alexandria and visit the Church of Evangelismos (Annunciation of the Virgin Mary), a significant basilica built in the mid-19th century, important to the city’s Greek community.
Participants will then see the Mohamed Ali statue in El-Mansheya Square and the Unknown Soldier monument before exploring Souq Turk, a remnant of Ottoman markets in Alexandria. This market, known as “Rue Sixes,” dates back to the early 20th century, making it Africa’s oldest shopping mall. Initially a stable for the British army’s horses, it was called “the Moroccan market.” “Rue Sixes” is named for its narrow streets reminiscent of famous French streets, its bustling atmosphere, and the fact that most goods are for women, though most sellers are men. This market is conveniently located near the port of Alexandria.
Afterward, we will visit the mosque square, including the famous Abu al-Abbas Mosque, and take panoramic photos of the citadel. Participants can then relax with refreshments and enjoy a sea view at a local old café. Finally, we will return to our meeting point.
