- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - Your initial destination in this historic city is the catacombs, the largest Roman cemetery, featuring three levels carved into the rock during the 1st or 2nd century.
- Serapeum of Alexandria - The “Pompey Pillar,” Egypt’s most esteemed memorial column, stands as a significant historical symbol. Crafted from solid red granite, this monumental structure towers at approximately 28 meters, with a base diameter of 2.7 meters. An inscription in elegant Greek adorns the upper western side, honoring Emperor Diocletian for his dedication to justice and his role as Alexandria’s protector. It also recognizes Postumus, the Prefect of Egypt, for overseeing the monument’s construction. The Pompey Pillar is a testament to Egypt’s rich heritage and enduring legacy.
- Qaitbay Castle - The Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria is one of Egypt’s most crucial defensive strongholds along the Mediterranean coast. In the 15th century A.D., it played a vital role in Alexandria’s fortifications. The Citadel is located at the entrance of the eastern harbor on Pharos Island’s east point. It was built on the site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse functioned until the Arab conquest, despite several disasters altering its shape. Restoration began under Ahmed Ibn Tulun (around 880 A.D). In the 11th century, an earthquake damaged the octagonal part. The base survived but only served as a watchtower, so a small mosque was constructed on top. In the 14th century, a devastating earthquake destroyed the building. An optional stop for lunch at the fish market is available.
- Bibliotheca Alexandria - The Library of Alexandria was one of the ancient world’s most renowned and influential libraries. Located in Alexandria, Egypt, it was constructed in the third century BC by the great ruler Ptolemy I Soter. The library was designed to house an extensive collection of books and manuscripts, including works on philosophy, mathematics, science, and literature. It quickly became a center of learning and culture in the ancient world, with its influence reaching far beyond Alexandria. The Library of Alexandria was famous for its vast collection of books and manuscripts, reportedly containing up to 500,000 scrolls, making it one of the largest knowledge repositories in the ancient world. It was also home to several renowned scholars and thinkers, including the mathematician Euclid and the astronomer Eratosthenes.
