Unveiling Alexandria: A Journey Through Time and History
Drawn by the allure of Alexandria’s ancient history, I embarked on a journey to explore its legendary sites. Guided by the knowledgeable Alaa Gaber, the day unfolded into a captivating exploration of the city’s rich past.
Arrival in Alexandria: A Warm Welcome
Our journey to Alexandria began with a comfortable drive from Cairo, and as we approached the city, the anticipation of exploring its ancient wonders grew. Upon arrival, we were greeted by our guide, Alaa Gaber, whose warmth and enthusiasm set the tone for the day. Her background as an archaeology graduate from Alexandria University was immediately evident as she began to weave stories of the city’s past, making the long day both enjoyable and enriching.
Our first stop was the legendary Library of Alexandria, or rather, its modern counterpart, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This architectural marvel stands as a tribute to the ancient world’s greatest center of learning. As we wandered through its halls, Alaa shared tales of the library’s historical significance, its destruction, and the efforts to revive its legacy. The statues of Ptolemy the First and Alexander the Great, discovered underwater, were particularly striking, reminding us of the city’s deep connection to its Hellenistic roots.
Exploring Ancient Marvels
Next, we ventured to the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, a site that beautifully encapsulates Alexandria’s multicultural heritage. Descending into the depths of these ancient burial chambers, we were surrounded by a fascinating blend of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman influences. Alaa’s explanations brought the site to life, highlighting the unique fusion of styles that characterized this period of Alexandria’s history.
Our journey continued to Pompey’s Pillar, a towering monument that stands as a testament to the city’s Roman past. Despite its misleading name, the pillar was erected in honor of Emperor Diocletian. Alaa’s insights into the site’s history, including the Serapeum that once stood there, added depth to our understanding of Alexandria’s role as a cultural crossroads.
A Perfect Conclusion by the Sea
The Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, was our next destination. As we explored this formidable fortress, Alaa recounted tales of its strategic importance and the legendary lighthouse that once guided sailors to safety. The views of the Mediterranean from the citadel were breathtaking, offering a moment of reflection on the city’s enduring legacy.
Our final stop was the Roman Amphitheatre, a well-preserved relic of Alexandria’s Roman era. As we sat in the ancient stone seats, Alaa painted a vivid picture of the performances and gatherings that once took place here, connecting us to the vibrant cultural life of the past.
The day concluded with a delightful seafood meal by the sea, a fitting end to our exploration of this historic city. Alaa’s thoughtful recommendations allowed us to savor the flavors of Alexandria, making the experience all the more memorable. This well-organized and informative tour, enriched by Alaa’s passion and expertise, left us with a deeper appreciation for Alexandria’s rich tapestry of history and culture. Alexandria Adventure
