Discover the historic 100-year-old British shipwreck, Minnewaska, resting approximately 20 meters underwater. This ship, sunk in 1916 by a mine, was constructed by the same company as the Titanic, White Star Line! The name Minnewaska is derived from an American Indian term meaning “clear water.” Built in Belfast in November 1908, the ship was 183 meters long and designed as a passenger steamer. During World War I, it served the British military in transporting troops. On November 29, 1916, while departing Souda with troops on board, it struck a mine laid by the German submarine UC23. With a breach below the waterline, Captain Gates navigated towards the nearest land, attempting to beach the ship near Marathi.
