- Alotau - East Cape Drive (Full Day Tour)
Join us for an unforgettable tour and immerse yourself in the genuine village life experience, skillful caving, and a drive to the tip of Papua New Guinea. This promises to be a fantastic day, so be sure to bring your camera! The local village is a 30-minute drive from town, with an additional hour to reach the skull cave. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery along the main road, passing various local villages and taking in the coastal views. In the village, you’ll be introduced to aspects of daily village life and participate in hands-on experiences such as food gathering, cooking, weaving, cleaning, construction, climbing, and more.
Additionally, learn about the history of cannibalism. In the past, Papua New Guinea communities were isolated by rugged mountains, dense jungles, and 600 outer islands, leading to the development of hundreds of dialects. Conflicts and battles inevitably arose, and enemy casualties were consumed. Witness the stone circle where village elders once deliberated on the distribution of body parts. Before you leave, enjoy a typical local meal of taro, yam, banana, and fruits, accompanied by fresh young coconut juice. Continue with an hour’s drive to the easternmost point of mainland PNG to see the Skull Caves, a site of many more enemy dismemberments. Observe the rock slab once used for butchering, with skulls littering the cave floor. The scene is emotional yet incredibly fascinating.
This will be a memorable experience, with a stopover at the country’s easternmost tip. On the return to Alotau, we’ll visit the Milne Bay War Memorial, explore the local vegetable market, and craft market, where you can purchase an authentic piece of craft or souvenir. Our final stop will be at the town lookout, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the bay.
