- Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf - The vibrant and colorful Bryggen is a major attraction in Bergen and Norway. It is the site of Bergen’s earliest buildings and has been a lively and significant part of the city for centuries. Bryggen is recognized as a shared heritage site and is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, with Bergen being a designated World Heritage City. This heritage site includes the historic Hanseatic wharf and buildings, making it one of the most renowned medieval urban areas in Norway.
- Bergenhus Fortress - Bergenhus Fortress and Royal Castle is among the oldest and best-preserved stone fortifications in Norway, featuring structures dating back to 1240. In medieval times, the area was known as Holmen and housed the royal residence, a cathedral, several churches, the bishop’s residence, and a Dominican monastery. Excavations have uncovered building foundations believed to date back before 1100.
- Byfjorden - Byfjorden, also known as the Cityfjord, has water depths ranging from approximately 5 to 350 meters and frames Bergen along its waterfront. It is a natural landmark visible from much of the city, situated between the seven mountains encircling Bergen. The 15-kilometer (9.3 mi) long fjord separates the island of Askøy from the mainland Bergen Peninsula, passing just north of Bergen on the mainland.
- Salhusfjorden - The Salhusfjord, 4 kilometers long and up to 500 meters deep, is located between Bergen and Alver Municipality. The Nordhordland Bridge crosses this fjord. The fjord is named after the village area of Salhus, where an inn known as a sáluhus existed in the early 12th century. It served as a transport hub for Nordhordland and was a small market town. It became one of the first industrialized areas when a hosiery manufacturer was established there in 1859.
- Nordhordland Bridge - The Nordhordland Bridge spans the Salhusfjord at a point where it is approximately 1300 meters wide and 500 meters deep. This pontoon and cable-stayed bridge features one tower. Due to the sea’s depth beneath the bridge, lateral anchorage between the abutments at each end was not feasible. This unique condition required extensive analysis in designing the footings at each end of the bridge. The free-floating bridge boasts the longest laterally-unsupported span in the world.
- Osterfjorden - Osterfjord is one of three fjords surrounding the island of Osterøy. It runs along the municipal border of Lindås and Osterøy municipalities. The fjord begins at Romarheimsfjorden and flows west for 27 kilometers (17 mi) before ending near the village of Knarvik at the confluence of four fjords: Osterfjorden, Radfjorden (to the north), Sørfjorden (to the south), and Salhusfjorden (to the west). Osterfjorden is generally about 1 to 3 kilometers (0.62 to 1.86 mi) wide, with its deepest point reaching 639 meters (2,096 ft) below sea level.
- Mostraumen - This canalized river with tidal water extends deep into the Osterfjord. The stream is approximately 600 meters long and between 50 and 60 meters wide at its narrowest point. Mostraumen was canalized (dredged) around 1913.
