- Jerash Ruins - The ancient city of Jerash stands as Jordan’s largest and most captivating Roman site, attracting numerous tourists. Its grand ceremonial gates, colonnaded streets, temples, and theaters reflect its past significance as an imperial hub. Even those with a casual interest in archaeology will find a half-day visit rewarding. Remember to bring a hat and sunscreen during warmer months, as the open ruins can be quite hot.
The expansive site may seem overwhelming initially, especially with minimal signage. To enhance your experience, consider hiring one of the knowledgeable guides (JD20) at the ticket checkpoint to navigate the main complex. Strolling leisurely and taking time to sit on a fallen column to admire the stunning views, you can explore the main ruins in at least two hours.
- King Abdullah Mosque - Completed in 1989 as a tribute by the late King Hussein to his grandfather, this iconic blue-domed mosque accommodates up to 7000 worshippers, with an additional 3000 in the courtyard. There is also a small section for 500 women and a much smaller royal enclosure. The spacious, octagonal prayer hall is topped by a magnificent blue dome, 35 meters in diameter, adorned with Quranic inscriptions. This is the only mosque in Amman that openly welcomes non-Muslim visitors.
- The Citadel - The Citadel boasts a rich history of occupation by numerous great civilizations. Evidence of habitation since the Neolithic period has been discovered, and the hill was fortified during the Bronze Age (1800 BCE). It became the capital of the Kingdom of Ammon after 1200 BCE and later fell under the influence of empires such as the Neo-Assyrian Empire (8th century BCE), Neo-Babylonian Empire (6th century BC), the Ptolemies, the Seleucids (3rd century BCE), Romans (1st century BCE), Byzantines (3rd century CE), and the Umayyads (7th century CE). After the Umayyads, the site experienced a period of decline, becoming an abandoned ruin sporadically used by Bedouins and seasonal farmers until 1878. Despite this gap, the Citadel of Amman is regarded as one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited places.
- Roman Theatre - This beautifully restored theatre is the most prominent and impressive remnant of Roman Philadelphia, and is a highlight for most international visitors to Amman. The theatre is carved into the northern side of a hill and can seat 6000 people. The best time for photography is in the morning when the light is gentle, although the views from the top tiers just before sunset are also exceptional.
