- Umm Qais - Discover Umm Qais, home to the remnants of ancient Rome’s Decapolis cities—a group of 10 located on the Roman Empire’s frontiers in the Middle East. Begin by traveling north through Jordan’s lush landscapes to the village of Umm Qais, which overlooks the ruins of another Roman Decapolis city known as “Gadara.” Enjoy the stunning views over the Sea of Galilee and Golan Heights while exploring the Greco-Roman ruins, including the amphitheater, a crumbled mausoleum, basilica terrace, and other theaters and treasures. Start the visit by walking along “Docomanos” street leading to the theater, which is unique as it faces west instead of north.
- Umm Qais - Continue to the basilica church to view its octagonal altar, originally a temple. Proceed to the main street “Cardomaximo,” meaning the main street, which runs east to west, unlike typical Roman streets that run north to south. Visit the town’s museum to admire valuable artifacts recovered from the site, including mosaics and marble statues.
- Pella - Then, travel to Pella, the site of a Hellenistic city with remains from early to later settlements. First mentioned as ‘Pihilum’ or ‘Pehel’ by the Egyptians in the 19th century B.C., Pella flourished under Roman rule, with temples, theaters, and baths constructed. Explore the antiquities, some over 8,000 years old. Return to Amman, where the trip concludes with a hotel drop-off.
