This exceptional museum is dedicated to commemorating the Partition of the subcontinent in 1947, honoring its victims, survivors, and enduring impact. During one of the most significant and distressing upheavals in modern history, over twenty million people relocated to a new homeland across a hastily drawn border, leaving cherished memories behind. In August 1947, when independence was granted to the former British India, it was divided into two nations, India and Pakistan. Thousands of families suddenly became strangers in the land they had inhabited for generations. As law and order collapsed, massacres and looting ensued as families departed their homeland to journey to their ‘new nation.’ The Partition Museum captures these untold stories.
- Wagah Border - Following a lunch break (not included), the tour proceeds to the Wagah Border between India and Pakistan, approximately 17 miles from Amritsar. Visitors will witness the ceremony marking the daily closing of the Indo-Pakistan border gates. This event is a must-see for its dramatic flair.
Experience the Beating Retreat Ceremony, featuring the ceremonial closing of the gates and the lowering of the flags of India and Pakistan. Observe as the Indian and Pakistani Rangers march towards the gates from their respective sides. Once the gates are opened, the soldiers salute each other and begin lowering their flags. The ceremony culminates with the soldiers returning to the border line for a final handshake. The bugle call signifies the end of the ceremony. Afterward, guests will be escorted back to their hotel in Amritsar.
