- Our Lord in the Attic Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder - This Catholic church, dating back to 1663, was a place where mass was celebrated discreetly despite being prohibited. The authorities often overlooked this, reflecting the Netherlands’ renowned religious tolerance, established in the sixteenth century under Willem of Orange. Today, the museum emphasizes themes of religious freedom and conscience, making it more than just a museum; it is a unique place for reflection and experience.
Extension
Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder is the city’s oldest museum, second only to the Rijksmuseum. This unique Golden Age monument has been preserved largely through private initiatives. In 2015, the museum expanded into an additional building at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 38, where a new entrance vestibule was created. The two buildings are connected by an underground passage. Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder is now a true in situ museum, where history is palpable, everything is authentic, and visitors can fully engage with the building and its narrative, even drawing connections to contemporary events.
