- Red Light District - Amsterdam is renowned for its liberal and tolerant atmosphere. The “Red Light District” gets its name from the red neon lights that illuminate the windows where women work as prostitutes.
In this area, visitors can explore a variety of sex shops, peep shows, strip clubs, sex theaters, and traditional Dutch brown cafes. Cultural attractions include the Prostitution Museum, the Museum of Eroticism, and the Cannabis Museum. This neighborhood, also known as the ‘Red Light District,’ is the heart of Amsterdam’s nightlife.
- Oude Kerk - The oldest church in Amsterdam
- Our Lord in the Attic Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder - This unique clandestine Catholic church was built atop a 17th-century merchant house. It served as a secret Christian church during Protestant times. The church retains its original furnishings, including typical Dutch wooden furniture, table clocks, and two kitchens with Delft blue tiles. Built by Jan Hartmann in the attic of his house, it now attracts over 80,000 visitors annually.
- Oudezijds Kolk - This canal features the oldest sluice gate in Amsterdam. The Kolksluice has been operational since the Middle Ages. In 1702, the castle of the Kolksluice was demolished and replaced with the current bridge. During high tide, the lock was closed to prevent flooding. When the tide is low, the lock is opened, allowing water to flow back into the sea. This sluicing process keeps the water clean.
- Centraal Station - Amsterdam Central Station is the main station of Amsterdam. Designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, famous for the Rijksmuseum, it opened in 1889. The station features Gothic and Renaissance elements, with 250,000 people passing through daily.
- Café the Schreiertower - From this location, Henry Hudson embarked on his voyage to the USA, discovering what is now New York, initially named New Amsterdam. Weeper’s Tower is known as a farewell spot, where women wept for their husbands who sailed to war. Although often considered a myth, evidence supports its truth. A memorial stone from 1566 commemorates a woman who was so heartbroken she went mad.
- Scheepvaarthuis - Originally the headquarters of six major shipping companies, including the Netherlands Steamship Company (SMN) and the Royal Packet Navigation Company (KPM), the Shipping House now serves as a 5-star hotel. Notable features include the elaborate central staircase and the boardroom on the corner of Prins Hendrikkade.
- NEMO Science Museum - This modern museum is Amsterdam’s science center and the largest science museum in the Netherlands. It features five floors of science experiments and exhibitions, along with a small cafeteria and gift shop offering scale models of the attractions.
- Het Scheepvaartmuseum | The National Maritime Museum - Dedicated to the rich Dutch maritime history, the museum’s collection includes paintings, scale models, weapons, and maps. The ship in front of the museum is a replica of ‘The Amsterdam,’ an 18th-century ship that sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies, built between 1985 and 1990.
- The Amstel - Experience the atmosphere on the Amstel River
- Magere Brug - The city’s most famous bridge
- Montelbaanstoren - Built in 1516 as part of Amsterdam’s defenses, the name ‘Crazy Jack’s Tower’ comes from the clock’s spontaneous ringing when it was first installed.
