- Muiderslot - The Muiderslot, also known as Amsterdam Castle, is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval castle near Amsterdam, dating back 700 years to its founding around 1285 by Count Floris V. Situated in Muiden, very close to Amsterdam, it boasts iconic round towers, a moat, and historic gardens.
In the 16th century, the castle’s next notable owner was P.C. Hooft (1581-1647), an author, poet, and historian who assumed the roles of sheriff and bailiff for the area. During the summer, he invited friends, scholars, poets, and painters, known as the “Muiderkring,” to the castle. By the end of the 18th century, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Fortunately, around 1900, sufficient funds were raised for its restoration, and renowned architect Pierre Cuypers was hired for the project. Today, it serves as a national museum, showcasing 17th-century life and armor.
Visitors have ample time to explore the castle! For those who prefer not to navigate narrow staircases, the beautiful gardens offer a delightful alternative.
- Muiden - There will be an hour to enjoy lunch, explore the old harbor, defense walls, and charming shops in the picturesque center.
- Kasteel de Haar - In the afternoon, visitors are transported into a magical fairy tale at the most impressive medieval castle in the Netherlands!
Castle de Haar is renowned for its rich and extravagant history, with many fascinating stories hidden behind its walls. Originally built in the 13th century, it came into the van Zuylen family in the 15th century. After centuries of wars and several severe storms, the castle was left in ruins until Baron Etienne van Zuylen, who married Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, undertook its reconstruction at the end of the 19th century. He enlisted architect Pierre Cuypers for the project, the same architect who designed the Rijksmuseum and Central Station in Amsterdam.
In the 1950s, the castle became a popular destination for the international jet set, with guests such as Roger Moore, Brigitte Bardot, and Maria Callas visiting Etienne’s grandson, Baron Thierry. The baron’s daughters and grandchildren still visit the castle for their holidays!
