- Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center - The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, open to the public since 1993, is situated on 140 acres at the southern edge of Turnagain Arm, near the entrance to Portage Valley. The center is dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned wildlife, as well as promoting wildlife education and awareness. Animals that cannot be released back into the wild are provided sanctuary in the center’s expansive habitats. Visitors have the opportunity to safely observe and photograph some of Alaska’s largest land animals, including moose, bison, elk, deer, caribou, bears, muskox, small mammals, and birds of prey. During the spring and summer months, guests may also witness the rehabilitation of orphaned baby animals from various species.
- Beluga Point - Beluga Point is named after the beluga whales that are often visible from the shoreline, particularly during the summer months of July and August.
This area is a popular stop for visitors due to its natural attractions, including wildlife and stunning views of Turnagain Arm, a narrow waterway surrounded by mountains. The picturesque backdrop of mountains and ocean provides excellent opportunities for photography and peaceful reflection. Occasionally, visitors can observe a tidal bore, a natural phenomenon where a wall of water rushes in, reversing the river’s flow. Beluga Point is one of the prime locations to witness this event along Turnagain Arm.
- Turnagain Arm - Turnagain Arm is a breathtaking fjord-like waterway located southeast of Anchorage, Alaska, renowned for its dramatic tides, stunning mountain vistas, and rich wildlife. As part of Cook Inlet, it boasts one of the world’s largest tidal ranges, creating a unique tidal bore where a wave surges inland during high tide. Visitors frequently spot beluga whales, Dall sheep, and various bird species along its shores. The Seward Highway, which runs alongside Turnagain Arm, offers one of Alaska’s most scenic drives, featuring views of rugged mountains and expansive tidal flats.
The guide will make several stops along the way for photos and interpretation.
