- Seward Highway - The journey from Anchorage to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center/Portage Glacier Area offers breathtaking views as travelers pass between the dramatic shorelines of Turnagain Arm and the towering peaks of the Chugach Mountains. The Seward Highway is renowned as one of the most scenic highways in the United States.
- Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center - Spanning 200 acres, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center leaves visitors in awe, including seasoned Alaskans familiar with grizzlies and other wildlife. The center’s mission is to preserve Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, research, education, and quality animal care. Open to the public since 1993, it educates visitors about Alaska’s wildlife. Coyotes peek from behind the brush, while a bald eagle swoops down on salmon remains left by a grizzly bear. Wood Bison roam 65 acres of tidal flat terrain as part of a program aimed at restoring the species to the Alaskan wilderness. Animals unable to return to the wild are provided a permanent home at the center. Join these exciting programs and observe animals in their natural, “wild” behavior.
Visitors will have approximately 90 minutes to view the animals. Coffee and food are available for purchase from vendors at the Center.
- Portage Glacier - The Portage Glacier Cruise is located an hour from Anchorage. This cruise brings you close to the glacier’s face. Guests will board the comfortable MV Ptarmigan, which features an enclosed, heated cabin and an open-air observation deck. The hour-long cruise is narrated by the US Forest Service, navigating around floating icebergs and approaching within 300 feet of the towering Portage Glacier, one of Alaska’s most popular attractions. There may be a chance to hear the distinctive rumbling of a calving glacier or rolling iceberg.
After the one-hour cruise, there will be an opportunity to have lunch at a nearby restaurant. Lunch is not included.
