Visitors often hope for a glimpse of Dall sheep and Beluga whales, with many believing in making “offerings to the Sheep and Whale Gods” for luck. While sightings are not guaranteed, every effort will be made to provide a memorable encounter with these magnificent creatures.
• Portage Glacier - In Portage Valley, visitors can view Explorer Glacier, Middle Glacier, and Byron Glacier, and enjoy a walk through a rainforest. Afterwards, they can grab a snack or meal at Portage Day Lodge for the return trip to Anchorage.
• Turnagain Gallery - This art gallery, owned by master log cabin builder Greg and his wife Wendy, a local jewelry artist, features their son Jordon Anderson, a professional wood carver. He often creates life-size wood carvings of local animals on-site. The gallery is filled with stunning sculptures, unique jewelry, captivating paintings, and photographic prints.
• Potter Marsh - Offering nearly panoramic views of Turnagain Arm, Potter Marsh is a scenic wildlife viewing area in Anchorage, surrounded by spruce, cottonwoods, and alder trees. The boardwalk over Rabbit Creek is a great spot to see spawning chinook, Coho, or humpback salmon from May to August, depending on the species. Moose are also frequent visitors year-round.
