- Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center - The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is the top visitor attraction in Southcentral Alaska. This non-profit sanctuary is committed to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, research, education, and excellent animal care. Visitors can immerse themselves in the region’s natural beauty and have the chance to observe a wide variety of native wildlife up close, including bears, wolves, moose, and eagles, among others, in a spacious 200-acre habitat designed to mimic their natural environment. It’s an unforgettable experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for Alaska’s wildlife.
- Portage Glacier - Make a brief stop in Portage Valley, where several hanging glaciers, which once spanned the entire 14-mile valley, can be seen. Portage Glacier has receded approximately 2.5 miles, leaving behind a dead lake. The glacial remnants visible today include Explorer, Middle, Byron, Burns, and Shakespeare glaciers. Although still massive, these glaciers are smaller reminders of the immense ice sheets that once covered this landscape. Next, enjoy a walk through the rainforest, followed by a ride back to Chugach State Park to marvel at the stunning views of Turnagain Arm.
- Cook Inlet - At Beluga Point, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Turnagain Arm with its sweeping coastal scenery and rugged cliffs. In spring and summer, glimpses of beluga whales swimming in the waters are often visible. Turnagain Arm offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, including beluga whales, Dall sheep, bald eagles, and sometimes bears, as well as scenic vistas of the Chugach Mountains and the unique phenomenon of bore tides.
- Turnagain Arm Trail, Northern Trailhead - The scenic drive to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and back to Anchorage takes a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes round trip.
