From Surf to Summit: Conquering Acatenango Volcano
Trading surfboards for hiking boots, my wife and I ventured to Antigua Guatemala to conquer the Acatenango Volcano. With the help of our incredible guides, we experienced breathtaking views, fiery lava eruptions, and cozy nights under the stars. This adventure was a thrilling departure from our usual oceanic pursuits.
The Journey Begins: A 4x4 Adventure
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s rhythm, but the call of the Acatenango Volcano was too enticing to resist. My wife and I decided to take a break from the waves and head to Antigua Guatemala for a different kind of adventure. We opted for the 4x4 ride to save our energy for the hikes around Acatenango and Volcán de Fuego. Riding in the back of the pickup was an exhilarating experience, the wind whipping through our hair as we held on tight, laughing at the thrill of it all.
Our guides, Joshua and Carlos, were the epitome of professionalism and fun. They made the journey to basecamp not just a ride, but an experience. Upon arrival, Joshua had prepared a fantastic lunch that fueled us for the evening’s adventure. The camaraderie among our group was palpable, a shared excitement for what lay ahead.
The Fuego Hike: A Fiery Spectacle
As the sun began to set, we embarked on the Fuego hike, an optional but highly recommended part of the trip. The sight of the sun dipping below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape, was breathtaking. But it was the lava eruptions that truly stole the show. Watching the fiery spectacle in the dark was an experience that words can hardly capture. It was a reminder of nature’s raw power and beauty, a moment that will forever be etched in my memory.
The cold was biting, a stark contrast to the warmth of the lava, and I was grateful for the extra layers I had packed. As someone used to the sun-soaked beaches of Central America, the chill was a new challenge, but one that added to the adventure.
A Cozy Night and a Rainy Morning
Returning to basecamp, we were greeted with a hearty meal of spaghetti bolognese and red wine, courtesy of Joshua. The cabins were cozy, offering a surprising warmth that made for a restful night’s sleep. The next morning, rain dashed our plans for a sunrise hike, but the simple breakfast and the cozy atmosphere of the camp made it a pleasant start to the day.
Despite the rain, the trip was nothing short of extraordinary. The guides, Joshua and Carlos, were not just leaders but companions on this journey, their kindness and professionalism elevating the experience. As we made our way back, I reflected on the adventure, grateful for the memories and the new perspective it offered. The Acatenango Volcano may not have waves to ride, but it provided a different kind of thrill, one that I would recommend to any fellow adventurer.
