Participants will explore Mayan spirituality and worldview, delve into traditional music and dance performed during ceremonies, and understand how Mayan spirituality has endured through history and syncretism (a blend of Mayan and Christian elements). They will also learn about the various language levels used in Mayan communities, the impact of colonization on the Mayans, and traditional clothing, among other topics.
Activities Planned
The group will ascend Cerro La Cruz to visit a Maya altar adorned with artificial objects, providing a comprehensive insight into the Mayan worldview and its connection to culture and identity. Participants will engage in playing traditional music and dancing. They will also learn about the history of the city and the Mayan civilization in the Guatemalan highlands before the Spanish arrival. On the descent, there will be a stop at La Candelaria Church to examine its construction and the elements on its facade. The tour will continue with a visit to Las Capuchinas Church (entrance fee of Q40 not included), followed by stops at Santa Catalina Arch, NIM POT, and concluding at La Merced.
