- Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi - The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a historically significant sacred bo tree (Ficus religiosa) situated in the Mahamewuna Garden in the historic city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is believed to have grown from a cutting of the southern branch of the ancient sacred bo tree, Sri Maha Bodhi, which was destroyed during the era of Emperor Ashoka the Great, at Buddha Gaya in India, where Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) achieved Enlightenment. The Buddhist nun Sangamitta Maha Theri, daughter of Indian Emperor Ashoka, brought the tree cutting to Sri Lanka in 288 BC during the reign of Sinhalese King Devanampiya Tissa. At over 2,300 years old, it is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date.
- Ruwanwelisaya - This Stupa, located in the Anuradhapura District in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, is renowned for its architectural brilliance and holds sacred significance for Buddhists worldwide. It was constructed by the illustrious King Dutugemunu (164 BC – 140 BC), who became the ruler of all Sri Lanka after defeating the Chola King Elara in battle. The Mahathupa or Ruwanweliseya is known by various other names, including Maha Stupa / Mahathupa (the great Dagoba), Rathnamali Stupa / Rathnamali Dagaba, Suvarnamali Mahaceti (in Pali), and Swarnamali Stupa / Swarnamali Chaitya. It is the most revered among the ancient Stupas (Dagobas) of Sri Lanka. The name Mahaseya or Mahathupa (the Great Tope) was used during the Golden Age of Anuradhapura. Ruwanweliseya Stupa is one of the “Solosmasthana,” the 16 sacred religious sites in Sri Lanka, and the “Atamasthana.”
- Isurumuniya Temple - The Meghagiri Vihara, now commonly referred to as Isurumuniya Vihara or Isurumuniya, is located near Tissa Wewa in Anuradhapura. However, the original Isurumuni Vihara is situated a few hundred meters away and is now known as Vessagiri Vihara. When this viharaya was discovered, it was initially thought to be the Isurumuniya mentioned in ancient texts, despite the absence of inscriptions. Later, when archaeologists identified the real Isurumuni Viharaya a few hundred meters away (with inscriptions confirming its name), the name Isurumuniya had already been adopted, and the site was named Vessagiriya.
- Mihintale - Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It is believed by Sri Lankans to be the location of a meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa, marking the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Today, it serves as a pilgrimage site and hosts several religious monuments and abandoned structures.
