- Mihintale - The Mihintale Wildlife Sanctuary is considered the world’s first sanctuary. With the advent of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Mihintale Mountain became a residential area for revered monks led by Arahath Mahinda Mahathera. As the community of monks and devout laypeople grew, the need for a hospital became apparent. The first hospital at Mihintale was established by King Sena II (853-887 AD) based on a tenth-century inscription found at the site. Today, visitors can see the restored layout of the hospital ruins at the entrance to Mihintale.
