- Archaeological Site of Aptera - At the archaeological site of Aptera, visitors can admire artifacts from all periods of this City-State’s habitation. The ancient city walls, stretching 3,480 meters, date back to its peak in the 4th century BC.
The theatre is from the Roman era. There are ruins of a villa with a peristyle courtyard from the early Roman period, built in the Hellenistic style. Remarkably tall Roman cisterns and parts of public and private baths can also be seen.
Buildings from the Byzantine Period are present as well. The view from this site is truly breathtaking!
- Vryses - Next, the journey descends to Vrisses, a lush village with numerous springs. The bridge here is noteworthy, as it is considered the oldest in Crete. An olive oil factory visit is also included.
- Georgioupolis - The following stop is Georgioupolis, a coastal village surrounded by eucalyptus trees and sandy beaches. It is located at the village’s small port, home to local fishing boats. The scenic Almyros River is a must-see, where visitors can enjoy a coffee.
- Lake Kournas - At Kournas Lake, visitors can admire the unique flora and fauna and the stunning landscape. Small boats are available for tours. Several taverns offer delicious dishes, including fish from the lake.
- Argyroupolis - Argyroupoli, formerly Ancient Lappa, is a well-preserved village with natural springs and many Venetian mansions still in use. Excavated parts of the ancient city of Lappa and Roman remains are found in and around the village.
Strolling through the village’s narrow alleys reveals traces of mosaic floors, Byzantine frescoed churches, and Venetian mansions. Nearby, the necropolis of ancient Lappa features carved Greco-Roman tombs, a monumental plane tree, and the temple of Pente Parthenes.
The most visited site is the famous Springs of Argyroupoli, set in a lush environment just below the village. Water flows from the cave of Agia Dynami, passing old watermills that once ground grain, and ends in the Mouselas River. These watermills have been transformed into taverns offering traditional cuisine.
